Nestled between the snow-capped peaks of Mount Kenya and the rolling Aberdare Range, Ol Pejeta Conservancy is a world-renowned travel destination that distinguishes itself through a pioneering "integrated" model where wildlife conservation, sustainable tourism, and commercial cattle ranching thrive in harmony. Historically, the 90,000-acre landscape was a colonial-era cattle ranch—once owned by colorful figures like the billionaire arms dealer Adnan Khashoggi—before its transformation in the 1980s and 90s into a non-profit sanctuary dedicated to protecting the plummeting populations of black rhinos and elephants. Today, it is famous for hosting the world's last two remaining northern white rhinos, Najin and Fatu, who live under 24-hour armed guard, and for being the only place in Kenya where you can see rescued chimpanzees at the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary. Beyond the "Big Five," the conservancy is home to rare northern species such as the Grevy’s zebra and Jackson’s hartebeest, as well as one of the highest predator densities in Kenya. Its highland climate on the Laikipia Plateau offers a temperate and comfortable escape year-round, characterized by warm, sunny days in the mid-twenties (70s°F) and crisp, chilly nights that make evening campfires an essential part of the experience.
