Lake Nakuru National Park is an iconic UNESCO World Heritage site situated on the floor of the Great Rift Valley, renowned for its diverse ecosystems that range from alkaline lake shores to yellow fever tree woodlands and rocky escarpments. Often referred to as a "birdwatcher’s paradise," it is most famous for the spectacular masses of pink flamingos that gather to feed on the lake’s algae, though their numbers fluctuate depending on water levels. Beyond the birds, the park is one of Kenya’s most successful Rhino Sanctuaries, providing a safe haven for both southern white and the endangered black rhinoceros, which are frequently spotted grazing near the lake’s edge. Despite its relatively compact size, the park is home to four of the "Big Five" (excluding elephants), including elusive leopards and "tree-climbing" lions. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the shimmering lake from vantage points like Baboon Cliff or explore the hidden Makalia Falls at the park's southern tip, making it an essential, high-impact stop for any Rift Valley safari.
